Bradley S. Korthaus

Sergeant

United States Marine Corps

Bradley S. Korthaus, son of Steve and Marilyn Korthaus, was born on 19 May 1974.

He attended Holy Family School and graduated from Assumption High School (Class of 1992).  While at Assumption, he wrestled, played football, and played tuba in the school band. On the football team he was a lineman and played on the special teams.  It was during his senior that the team won the conference title and wearing number 52.  His classmates remember him as the class clown

After graduation, Bradley enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  After basic and advanced training, he spent the rest of his four year tour in California.  He left the Marines in 1996 and met Barbi Schneckloth.  She had moved in next door to his parents.  Bradley proposed to Barbi around Christmas 2002.

After the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, he decided to rejoin.  This time it was with the Marine Corps reserves as part of Engineering Company C, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, 4th Force Service Support Group based in Peoria.  His unit was called to active duty during Iraqi Freedom in January 2003.  On 24 March 2003, Bradley and fellow Marine Corporal Evan James, were fording the Saddam Canal in southeastern Iraq, to set up a fire support position for a water purification unit on the other side of the waterway.  During this crossing both Marines fell into the water.   Bradley’s body was found a couple of days later.

Bradley was survived by his parents and a younger brother, Drew.

Sergeant Bradley S. Korthaus, United States Marine Corps, is buried in Rock Island National Cemetery.

On 26 March 2003, Assumption High School received a $1,000 anonymous donation to create the Sergeant Bradley S. Korthaus ‘92 Memorial Scholarship.
