Daryl Alan John

Daryl Alan John, the son of Floyd W. and Dorothy Cumpton John, was born on 2 January 1950, in Burlington, Iowa.

 

While in high school, Daryl was a Golden Gloves boxer.  The biggest night of his young boxing career was a match against Ottumwa's Rick Graem during the 1967 Iowa Golden Gloves Lightweight Division championship match.  Throughout the match, the crowd was on its feet, cheering for both fighters.  Daryl lost that bout in a split decision.

 

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1968.

 

Daryl enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a jet mechanic.  He served one tour of duty in Vietnam.  While stationed at the Marine Air Corps Station in Beaufort, South Carolina he was involved in a skydiving accident that took his life on 30 January 1972, near Frogmore, South Carolina.

 

He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington and the Cool Blue Sky Diving Club.

 

Besides his parents, Daryl was survived by two brothers, Richard Davis of Burlington and Gary Davis of Englewood, Colorado; one sister, Mrs. Janice Friedel of Burlington; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Cumpton of Burlington; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

 

Sergeant Daryl Alan John, United States Marine Corps, is buried in Burlington’s Memorial Park Cemetery.
