Edward George Glovka

Edward George Glovka, the son of Henry W. and Mary (Weber) Glovka, was born in Windom, Minnesota on 2 December 1915.   At the tender age of nine days, Edward’s mother died from blood poisoning.  He was placed in a Sister’s Orphanage in Sioux City, Iowa.  When Edward’s father remarried in 1921, he was taken out of the orphanage and they moved to Davenport.

 

Edward entered the Army in March 1941 as a member of Battery B, 185th Iowa Field Artillery.  He received his basic training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana and received additional training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. 

 

Edward received his commission as a Second Lieutenant at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was shipped to Shennago, Pennsylvania before going overseas in May 1943.  He saw action in Tunisia before being transferred to Sicily with the 5th Army, 339th Field Artillery Battalion, 88th Infantry Division, where he remained until the Italian invasion began.  While patrolling the outskirts of Naples in the winter of 1943, he severely froze both feet and was sent to a North African hospital for treatment.

 

On 13 August 1944, Edward was Killed-In-Action at Anzio, Italy.

 

Second Lieutenant Edward George Glovka, United States Army, is buried with is fellow brothers in arms at the Florence American Cemetery in Florence, Italy.

 

Edward was survived by his father, a sister Sister Mary Celeste (Viola) Glovka, and two half brothers Emil and Bernard Glovka.
