John Patrick Hogan, the son of John J. and Sara M. Hogan, was born in Davenport, Iowa on 11 November 1945. His brilliant military career came to an end on 20 May 1979, when he died in a helicopter crash while on a training flight in New Hampshire.
Jack graduated from Saint Paul the Apostle grade school and Assumption High School (Class of 1963) where he captained the football and wrestling teams. He received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated and was commissioned an Ensign on 5 June 1968. Shortly after his graduation from the Naval Academy, Jack married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Jo McGivern.
He was designated a Naval Aviator after completing flight training in September 1969. After further training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, Jack’s first assignment took him to Vietnam where he served with the Helicopter Attack Squadron (Light) THREE from January to December 1970. His other assignments as a pilot included Helicopter Combat Support Squadron THREE in Imperial Beach, California from January 1971 to May 1973. He served as an Instructor Pilot in Helicopter Training Squadron EIGHTEEN in Pensacola, Florida for two and one half years. He was then transferred to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) THIRTY-ONE for training in the SH-2F aircraft for further assignment to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) THIRTY-THREE in San Diego, California in December 1975. As Detachment Officer-in-Charge, Jack deployed on the USS Francis Hammond homeported in Atsuigi, Japan. He attended the Armed Forces Staff college from August through December 1978, then served as an Instructor Pilot with the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) THIRTY in January 1979.
Jack’s helicopter left Norfolk Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia for a training flight to New Hampshire. At about 9:30 a.m., the helicopter went down in a field near a sparsely populated area of Londonderry.
Jack was survived by his wife Patricia; a daughter Shannon and a son Kevin; his parents; three sisters Patricia J. (Hogan) Johnston-Nation, Kathleen (Hogan) Morrison, and Colleen M. (Hogan) Sullivan; and a brother, Michael J. Hogan.
Lieutenant Commander John Patrick “Jack” Hogan, United States Navy, is buried in Davenport’s Mount Calvary Cemetery. Among his many decorations and awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 2nd through 27th Strike/Flight awards, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, Vietnamese Campaign Ribbon, Navy Expert Pistol Medal.
On the occasion of the 35th reunion of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1968 on 30 August 2003, an Alumni Hall Honor Chair Dedication ceremony took place at the United States Naval Academy, in memory of Lieutenant Commander John Patrick “Jack” Hogan.
