John William Salome

John W. Salome, the only son of John E. and Louisa Salome, was born on 10 June 1919.

 

John attended Burlington (Iowa) High School, however, he withdrew from the school on 24 January 1936.

 

John entered the United States Army circa 1940 and was assigned to Troop K, 113th Cavalry.  In January 1944, he left for the European Theater of Operations.  John’s parents received word from the War Department in October 1944, that John was reported as Missing-In-Action on 2 October in Germany.  His status was changed to Killed-In-Action when his parents received word in April 1945.  Before entering the service, John worked for Western Union.

 

John was survived by his parents; three sisters, Mrs. Harold M. Konzen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mrs. John Staff of Fort Madison, Iowa, and Mrs. Richard Cable of Burlington; two nieces; three nephews; his grandmother, Anna Vollmer; and his grandfather, Fred Salome.

 

Corporal John William Salome, United States Army, is buried in Burlington’s Aspen Grove Cemetery.
