Kenneth Richard Cloud
Private First Class
United States Marine Corps
Kenneth Richard Cloud, the youngest son of Eugene and Florence M. Schauer Cloud, was born on 6 April 1931 in Burlington, Iowa.
A 1949 graduate of Burlington High School, Kenneth continued his education at Burlington Junior College where he eventually graduated in 1951. While attending Burlington Junior College, Kenneth worked at the Iowa Ordnance Plant in Middletown.
He entered the United States Marine Corps in February 1952 and took his basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California.
Approximately 29 July 1952, Kenneth’s parents received a telegram informing them that Kenneth drowned while swimming near Camp Del Mar, California on 27 July. However, it was not until they received another telegram on 9 August that the family learned Kenneth’s body was recovered on 7 August on the beach near where he drowned. A memorial service was held on 10 August in Saint John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church.
The word of Kenneth’s death was devastating for Maxine Wendlandt. She and Kenneth were to be married on 24 August.
Kenneth was a member of Saint John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church of Flint River Township, and of the choir and the Andrew Club of that church. He also belonged to the Eagles Lodge in Burlington.
Kenneth was survived by his parents; his brother Dale Eugene of Des Moines, Iowa; and a nephew.
Private First Class Kenneth Richard Cloud, United States Marine Corps, was buried in Flint River Township’s Greenwood Cemetery.
