William E. Abendroth

William E. Abendroth, the only son of Edward C. and Kate Abendroth, was born circa 1922 in Davenport, Iowa.  In 1930, the family moved to West Burlington, Iowa where he attended school.  He attended high school in Burlington and graduated with the Class of 1940.

 

William was inducted into the United States Army on 12 November 1942 and left for the European Theater of Operations on 19 February 1943.  Assigned to the 532nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, it is believed that he took part in the units January 1944 Rapido River Crossing in Italy.  It was during this battle that William was Killed in Action on 21 January 1944.

 

In addition to his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Lyon and Marcella Abendroth, survived William.

 

Private First Class William E. Abendroth, United States Army, is buried in Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy.

 

Among his awards and decorations is the Purple Heart.
